Introduction: Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is used
to detect, diagnose, and monitor diabetes mellitus, reflecting glycemic control over the previous 8 to 12 weeks. It is associated with the development of metabolic disorders, diabetic complications, and adverse cardiovascular outcomes.
Objective: To evaluate the association between HbA1c,
fasting glucose, and metabolic syndrome among workers from a high Andean region in Huancayo, Peru, in 2023.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional correlational
study with a quantitative approach was conducted among 89 workers (both sexes) from a power plant in Huancayo, Peru, during 2023. HbA1c and fasting glucose levels were determined from blood samples. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed according to the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. The association between variables was assessed using the Chi-square test, and the Somers’ D test was applied to evaluate the direction and strength of association.
Results: In the total population evaluated (n=89), more
than half of the workers (54%) presented elevated HbA1c levels, 19% had elevated fasting glucose, and 55% met criteria for metabolic syndrome. A significant association was found between HbA1c and fasting glucose with metabolic syndrome, showing a strong positive direction (Somers’ D = +0.980).
Conclusion: HbA1c is associated with fasting glucose and with all criteria of metabolic syndrome, representing an important indicator for metabolic control.
