Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of the ingestion of powdered Citrus aurantifolia “lemon” peel on the modulation of lipid metabolism in rats with induced liver failure. Materials and methods: An experimental, prospective and analytical study was conducted in an animal model. 30 male Holtzman rats were used, which were randomly distributed into five groups (n=6). Powdered Citrus aurantifolia “lemon” peel was obtained by dehydration and pulverization, which was mixed with the balanced diet for the species. Treatment of groups I and II was normal diet and groups III, IV and V were with a diet mixed with powdered Citrus aurantifolia “lemon” peel at 1; 3 and 9% respectively. For 28 days, a 15% fructose solution with 5% alcohol was supplied in the drinking troughs of groups II to V; At the end of treatment, the patient was anesthetized with intraperitoneal pentobarbital for liver removal. Triglycerides, PPAR-α, PPAR-γ, and SREBP were determined in liver tissue. Results: Triglyceride concentrations in the groups receiving Citrus aurantifolia peel powder were lower compared to group II (p<0.05). In group V, which consumed a diet containing 9% Citrus aurantifolia “lemon” peel powder, an increase in PPAR-α and a decrease in PPAR-γ and SREBP were evident, with the latter being significant (p<0.05). Histologically, the groups treated with the powder showed progression of micro and macrovesicular steatosis, as well as ballooning degeneration, compared to group II, suggesting a paradoxical effect at the cellular level. Conclusion: Intake of Citrus aurantifolia “lemon” peel powder has a hepatoprotective effect expressed in lower levels of triglycerides and SREBP in liver tissue compared to ethanol and fructose consumption in rats.
