Abstract

Introduction: Fibromyalgia is a disorder recognized by chronic pain of unknown cause and some other disorders such as sleep, fatigue and psychological. There are no specific treatments to cure this pathology and no biological markers have been established to control it and the pharmacological treatment of fibromyalgia has only created partial relief. Objective: The objective of the following review article is to determine the effects of the gluten-free diet on the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Material and Methods: The Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and PubMed databases were used, from January to March 2021.Four studies were included which featured open access randomized and non-randomized controlled clinical trials in which a gluten-free diet was administered to people with fibromyalgia. Results: The analysis of the literature shows that the role of the gluten-free diet in patients suffering from fibromyalgia seems to be effective in reducing its symptoms. Conclusions: Although this aspect seems to be a promising approach for the non-pharmacological treatment of fibromyalgia, more information is needed to confirm this relationship.
