Introduction: Diet management is crucial in controlling type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially considering the characteristics of global cuisines. This is particularly relevant in the current context of Peru.
Objective: To determine the impact of a nutritional educational intervention on the level of knowledge about food portions in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Methodology: A pre-experimental study with pre-test and post-test was conducted on a convenience sample of 28 outpatient individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus in a Peruvian hospital. A validated knowledge test was used to evaluate the impact before and after the intervention.
Results: The results showed statistically significant differences between the pre-test and post-test means (p=0.000<0.05), indicating that the nutritional educational intervention significantly impacted the level of knowledge about food portions in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Specifically, the percentage of patients with low knowledge levels decreased from 67.87% to 0%, while the percentage with high knowledge levels increased from 32.13% to 64.3%.
Conclusion: Nutritional educational interventions significantly impact the level of knowledge about food portions. In other words, they are effective in significantly improving diet management in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. These findings highlight the importance of implementing educational nutritional interventions as strategies for the comprehensive treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Peru.
