ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Anemia and obesity are public health issues. The WHO proposed the use of the Body Mass Index for the diagnosis of obesity. However, the precision to indirectly evaluate the difference between visceral fat and lean tissue compartments is low, emerging measures such as waist circumference and waist-to-height index, that are more accurate to determine visceral fat through abdominal obesity.
Objectives: To evaluate the association between anemia and central obesity in women of reproductive age.
Methodology: A cross-sectional analytical study, based on data from the survey "Demographic and Family Health for the year 2019". The sample was 11,590 women of reproductive age. Statistical analysis was performed in Stata 16.0. To determine the association between the study variables, the crude and adjusted prevalence ratio (PR) were calculated with their 95% CI, using generalized linear models (GLM) with the Poisson family. A significance level of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: It was found that 20.27% of women of reproductive age had anemia and 25.31% had obesity. The prevalence of central obesity through to abdominal circumference and waist-to-height ratio was 79.36% and 87%, respectively. It was found that women from urban areas had more anemia than those from rural areas (p=0.048). The anemia prevalence ratio tends to decrease as BMI levels increase: normal weight (PR 0.89, p=0.80), overweight (PR 0.74, p=0.48) and obesity (PR 0.65, p=0.33). No association was found between the group of women of reproductive age with anemia and central obesity through abdominal circumference (OR 0.91, p=0.33), and waist-to-height ratio (OR 1.01, p=0.916).
Conclusion: Conclusive results were not found between central obesity and anemia.
