Introduction: Health-promoting lifestyle is an important factor that influences individual health status and can prevent cardiovascular diseases and premature deaths.
Objective: To evaluate the lifestyle that promotes health and the associated personal factors in residents of an andean amazon district of Peru.
Material and methods: The study was observational, cross-sectional and analytical. The sample was 500 residents of a sector of the Nueva Cajamarca district. Lifestyle was measured by the Lifestyle Profile Questionnaire (PEPS-I) and is classified into six dimensions (health responsibility, physical activity, nutrition, self-actualization, interpersonal support and stress management). Regarding personal factors, they were classified according to the determinants of Nola Pender's Health Promotion Model. A descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analysis was used with the Poisson regression test and the goodness of fit was evaluated with the Hosmer-Lemeshow test.
Results: 61.80% of all participants have an unhealthy lifestyle and 70.80% have unhealthy physical activity. Furthermore, the personal factors associated with a better lifestyle were: sometimes consumes alcohol (aOR: 3.87, p: 0.044), less time watching television (aOR: 0.87, p: 0.027), a higher stratum socioeconomic (aOR: 3.31, p: <0.001) and having drinking water (aOR: 1.54, p: <0.001).
Conclusions: Most of the residents have an unhealthy lifestyle. On the other hand, the personal factors that were significantly associated with a better lifestyle are less alcohol consumption, less time spent watching television, a higher socioeconomic stratum, and having drinking water. Given these findings, it is recommended to create and implement improvement interventions with scientific evidence in residents with health inequalities.
