Utilization of SARC-F for sarcopenia screening in adult hospitalized patients.

Introduction: the loss of muscle mass begins in adulthood, when not identified early can lead to the emergence of sarcopenia over the years.
Objective: to evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia in hospitalized adult patients using SARC-F screening.
Method: transversal, descriptive and quantitative study. The sample consisted of adult patients with up to 24 hours of hospital admission, excluding those with mental or physical disability to perform anthropometry. Sociodemographic, anthropometric and functional data were collected. The anthropometric
parameters used were Body Mass Index and calf circumference. SARC-F was used to detect the risk of sarcopenia. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics.
Results: the sample comprised a total of 100 hospitalized adults. A higher percentage of hospitalization was observed due to strokes (n=32/32%), with a nutritional diagnosis of overweight according to body mass index (n=48/48%). We found 41% of the sample (n=41) with signs suggestive of sarcopenia according to the application of SARC-F screening.
Discussion: studies show that the identification of loss of muscle mass in adults can determine the emergence of sarcopenia throughout life, but few studies use screening as a risk diagnosis in the adult population.
Conclusion: the application of SARC-F screening has been shown to be sensitive for application in hospitalized adults aiming at early screening for sarcopenia.
