Effect of a nutritional counseling and follow-up campaign on self-perceived well-being, nutritional status and egg consumption in older adults of FENAVI-FONAV's Línea Dorada in Colombia

Abstract

Introduction: Aging comes with a series of structural and physiological changes characterized by progressive loss of functionality, increased vulnerability and malnutrition. The evolution of some of the diseases that occur depends largely on environmental factors such as nutrition. Professionally oriented nutritional care, including nutritional counseling and demystification of some foods such as eggs, is essential to reduce risk factors and promote an adequate nutritional status.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of a nutritional counseling and follow-up campaign on self-perceived well-being, nutritional status and egg consumption in older adults in Colombia.

Methodology: Experimental, longitudinal, analytical study in which 584 older adults distributed in all departments of Colombia underwent a wellness counseling and nutritional follow-up campaign at 3 months.

Results: The mean age of the population studied was 73.6±7.2 and 46.9% were overweight or obese. Self-perception of health was 6.15 points at baseline and 7.63 points for follow-up (p<0.05). When comparing nutritional status at baseline and follow-up, there was a significant difference of 18.8% (p<0.05) and egg consumption increased in 20% and decreased in 6% of participants.

Conclusion: A nutritional counseling and follow-up campaign has statistically significant effects on self-perceived well-being, nutritional status and egg consumption in older adults in Colombia.
