Abstract

Introduction: Energy drinks are non-alcoholic drinks that stimulate physical and mental performance.

Objective: Determine the factors associated with the consumption of energy drinks in university students.

Material and Methods: Descriptive research with a cross-sectional non-experimental design, carried out in a sample of 254 students from the professional careers of Nursing, Obstetrics, Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering whose ages range from 18 to 30 years. The data obtained was collected with a questionnaire of factors associated with the consumption of energy drinks. The normality test was performed with the Kolmogorov-smirnov test and the data treatment and analysis was performed with Cramer's V statistic.

Results: Sex, age, employment status and place of residence have a high association with respect to the consumption of energy drinks in university students and only marital status has a low association (p-value= 0.073). Furthermore, there is a relationship between professional career and frequency of consumption (p-value= 0.000) and reason for consumption (p-value= 0.041). On the contrary, There is no relationship between type of energy drink and professional career (p-value= 0.069).

Conclusion: The consumption of energy drinks in university students is associated with sex, age, employment status and place of residence. On the other hand, marital status is not associated with consumption
