Introduction: Healthy eating behaviors are very important for adolescents as they affect long-term health. Geographical factors influence knowledge and attitudes towards healthy eating, where adolescents in coastal areas tend to have easier access to fish, while in upland areas, protein consumption is often limited. A Transtheoretical Model (TTM)-based approach has been shown to be effective in changing adolescents' attitudes and knowledge regarding healthy eating. This study aims to identify differences in knowledge and attitudes of adolescent girls regarding healthy eating in highland and coastal areas, and evaluate the effectiveness of a TTM-based education program.
Methods: The research design used a quasi-experiment with pretest-posttest involving 139 adolescents in Cigedug (n = 94) and Caringin (n = 45)
Result: Results showed most adolescents in Cigedug (90.38%) and Caringin (32.37%) were at the pre-contemplation stage, with some moving to the contemplation (Cigedug 64.89%, Caringin 48.89%) and preparation (Cigedug 78.69%, Caringin 54.55%) stages after the intervention. Significant improvements in nutrition knowledge were recorded in Highland (pre-test = 44.17, post-test = 50.15) and Coastal (pre-test = 41.91, post-test = 48.22). Targets for healthy eating improved, with breakfast habits (93.75% Highlands, 75% Coastal), fruit and vegetable consumption (68.75% Highlands, 91.67% Coastal), as well as reduced fast-food consumption (75% in both regions).
Conclusion: Food diary and personal goals effectively support eating behavior change.
