Evaluation of a nutritional intervention to improve the quality of life in breast cancer patients attending a hospital in Tegucigalpa (Honduras)

Abstract

Introduction:

Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent malignancies among women and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in Honduras. Beyond medical treatment, patients’ quality of life is significantly impacted in physical, emotional, social, and nutritional domains—areas often overlooked in outpatient care.

Objectives:

To implement and evaluate the effectiveness of a comprehensive intervention plan aimed at improving the quality of life of women diagnosed with breast cancer attending outpatient oncology services at Hospital San Felipe in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Material and Methods:

A retrospective, observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted with a population of 31 breast cancer patients. The intervention included nutritional assessment and counseling, recommendations for physical activity, psychological support, and clinical monitoring. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) was used to assess quality of life outcomes.

Results:

Patients reported significant impairments in physical, emotional, and functional dimensions. Following the intervention, improvements were observed in perceived overall health, appetite, energy levels, and psychological adaptation to treatment. Fatigue and loss of physical function were the most frequently reported symptoms prior to the intervention. Post-intervention data indicated enhanced coping strategies and greater participation in wellness activities.

Discussion:

The comprehensive, context-sensitive approach addressed key gaps in conventional oncology care. The program’s adaptability to local resources and its patient-centered design were essential to its success.

Conclusions:

The intervention plan proved feasible and effective in improving quality of life for outpatient breast cancer patients. Institutional adoption of this model is recommended to strengthen holistic oncology care in similar settings.
