La historia de la dieta del pomelo: Cuatro misterios resueltos

Resumen

Introducción: Hace varias décadas, la dieta del pomelo, o dieta de los 18 días, apareció como un hipotético tratamiento para ayudar en la pérdida de peso, siendo este fruto cítrico la clave en el programa de planificación de la dieta.
Objetivos: Esta revisión valora la nutrición y la historia para descubrir cuándo apareció la dieta, quién tuvo esta idea, qué valor energético y nutricional y cómo actuar en la hipotética reducción del peso corporal.
Métodos: se llevó a cabo una revisión en PubMed, Google Scholar y Web of Knowledge y una búsqueda exhaustiva de la literatura "gris".
Resultados: La información revisada podría indicar que esta dieta fue promovida por la industria alimentaria y cinematográfica y extendida intencionalmente o no por Ethel Barrymore desde principios de la década de 1920, siendo un tratamiento bajo en calorías donde probablemente la toronja no tiene nada que ver con esa pérdida de peso. Además, los detalles de la planificación del menú no eran del todo uniformes y variados con la literatura consultada porque no hay ningún libro o folleto sobre la dieta original.
Conclusiones: Nuestra revisión resolvió el misterio de la dieta del pomelo desde un punto de vista histórico-nutricional.
