Introduction: Calorie-protein adequacy is the amount of
calories and proteins that a patient receives upon admission
in relation to their nutritional needs. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between caloric protein adequacy and the prognosis of patients upon admission to the intensive care unit of the Dos de Mayo National Hospital.
Material and methods: Quantitative research of non-ex
perimental design, cross-sectional correlational-causal level,
carried out on 134 patients over 18 years of age, Hospitalized in the intensive care service of the Dos de Mayo National Hospital in Lima, Peru. Calorie-protein adequacy was obtained from the level of calories and proteins; and the prognosis with the APACHE II and SOFA scores; information that was obtained from the clinical history. A descriptive analysis was per formed; to evaluate the relationship of the variables, the non parametric Kendall Tau correlation coefficient and the chi square test were used.
Results: Of the 134 patients, 90% received polymeric
powder-type enteral nutrition. 56% received a volume of less than 500 ml at the start of enteral nutrition, in twenty-four hours. 63% had a caloric adequacy <90%. 32% of caloric ad equacy ≤ 90% had an APACHE II (p= 0.113) of good prog
nosis and 47% had a SOFA of good prognosis (p= 0.352).
34% of protein adequacy ≤ 90% had an APACHE II of poor
prognosis (p= 0.124), 49% of protein adequacy > 90% had
a SOFA of poor prognosis (p= 0.377).
Conclusions: The calorie-protein adequacy of the patients
upon admission to the intensive care unit of the Dos de Mayo National Hospital was evaluated, where it did not present a relationship with the prognosis by the APACHE II and SOFA score.
